After more than nine months of work, the final production of the 52-meter-high plant for LKAB in Kiruna is now approaching. The assignment began in February and is expected to be completed in November.
The building, which consists of 500 tons of steel, will contain an indirect coal plant, which in turn will help to both streamline production and reduce the environmental impact at LKAB’s processing plant, KK3 in Kiruna. A large and extensive work that has had its challenges.
– The biggest challenge has been the delivery of materials. What normally takes five or six weeks has in some cases taken several months. It’s important to have good planning and be flexible during production. In addition to the heavy steel structure, we have constructed and installed duct systems and 4,500 square meters of roof and walls, which alone weigh 150 tons. We have also spent about 15,000 hours making all the piping, mechanical installations and insulation of the ducts, says Ronnie Nilsson, site manager and responsible for the entire production.
Vinab is a county-wide company in Norrbotten with long experience of manufacturing, assembly, repairs and maintenance for heavy industry. And it is the staff that is the great asset. We are certified in a number of specialist areas and place great emphasis on both safety and environmental work.
– In this project, around 30 people have worked on everything from construction to assembly, and we have been responsible for all infrastructure on site. That’s why we can be both safe and efficient in our assignments,” says Ronnie Nilsson.
